Community Involvement

Northgate Mall works hard to be a good, involved corporate citizen. We're proud of the ties we've created with our neighbors during our 30-plus years here, and are always looking for ways to give back to a community that has given so much to us over the years. Here are a few examples of our commitment.
The Fountain Fund
Each month, Northgate Mall gathers the coins shoppers toss into the Mall's three fountains and donates them to a local charity or organization. Over the years, the coins have been donated to The Parkinson's Wellness Center, the William Ellison Memorial Fund, Senior Independence of Llanfair, Junior Achievement of Greater Cincinnati, The Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, the Salvation Army and many, many others. But Northgate Mall is really just the custodian of the Fountain Fund. The donations are made possible by the kindness of our shoppers.
Fire & Safety Expo
Each year, Northgate Mall works with the Colerain Township Fire Department and other area police and fire departments to produce the Fire and Safety Expo. The Expo, which is free of charge, draws hundreds of Greater Cincinnati families and is one of the area's largest celebrations of National Fire Prevention Safety Month. It has featured numerous fire and safety vehicles, the Sparky the Dog costumed character, drug dogs, a sprinkler demonstration, the Kids Combat Challenge and exhibits on School Bus Safety.

Northgate Station
Northgate Station, a substation of the Colerain Township Fire Department (CTFD), is located in storefront space inside Northgate Mall. It is staffed by the CTFD and its off-duty firefighters and is an arrangement totally unique to the shopping mall industry. It is also a totally unique arrangement from the CTFD's perspective.
Northgate Station provides a variety of services to the Mall and its patrons. Mall walkers, for example, can have their blood pressure checked or even get a blood sugar reading. The Station also provides CPR classes, information on a variety of health and safety issues, and child safety seat inspections. The Station also works with the Hoxworth Blood Center, providing a convenient place for blood donation. But perhaps the most important service provided by the Station is an on-site emergency medical attention for the Mall and its shoppers.
Northgate Station came about as the result of the Mall's constant efforts to get involved with its community. We're always looking for organizations to partner with, and the CTFD is a great partner.
The CTFD is generally acknowledged as one of the best departments in all of Ohio. Our relationship dates back many years, and includes a variety of programs. Each year, for example, the CTFD holds its Fire & Safety Expo at the Mall.
When the CTFD approached the Mall with the idea of Northgate Station, we jumped at the opportunity.

Mall Walking
Northgate Mall is home to a dedicated group of area residents who walk inside the Mall for exercise. Our Mall Walkers are like family to us, and we do our best to make things as easy as possible. The Mall opens early to better accommodate the Mall Walkers and, with our Mercy Franciscan Hospital partners, even offer free blood pressure screening every Monday.

Pinewood Derby
The Pinewood Derby, a Boy Scout tradition, takes place twice during the Spring at Northgate Mall. The Derby is a car race in which Boy Scouts across the country (ours are from the Whitewater and Pathfinder Districts in Cincinnati) gather to race cars that they have carefully constructed with the use of pinewood and imagination.
Each year, around 70 Scouts participate on a 35-foot homemade track complete with an electronic finish line. Family members, friends and, of course, Mall shoppers gather to watch and cheer on their favorites.
Pinewood Derby cars must fall within certain weight limits. There are, however, no limits on imagination. Past car designs have included a Crest Toothpaste box car, a car with a dinosaur as the driver and, of course, all manner of NASCAR replicas.
