History

Northgate Mall opened in 1972 on the former site of the Mt. Healthy Airport. When it opened, the Mall was heralded as "one of the largest and most modern shopping centers in the country" which was expected to "change the shopping habits of the area."

Northgate's first renovation took place in 1988, when much of the Mall's earth tone interior floor and wall coverings were replaced. An extensive, three-prong renovation followed in 1992. First was the reconfiguration of Mall space and the addition and extension of concourses to accommodate the Lazarus department store, a new food court and 30 new stores. Second was the renovation of 30 existing stores. And third was the construction of a three-story, 760-space parking garage. This renovation project lasted a year and cost in excess of $40 million.

In June of 2000, Northgate Mall was purchased by a partnership led by David Hocker & Associates, Inc. (DHA). DHA, a real estate development, management and investment company based in Owensboro, Kentucky, purchased the Mall from Eastrich Northgate LLC through AEW Capital Management.

In 2001, the Mall underwent a transformation. This project included the replacement of all common area furniture, a change in the color scheme and an overall refreshment of the interior.

Northgate Mall is located at Colerain Avenue and Springdale Road in Colerain Township, less than a mile south of I-275 and just a mile north of Ronald Reagan/ Cross County Highway. The Mall has more than 1.1 million square feet of retail space, and is comprised of more than 100 specialty shops and four department stores: Lazarus, Dillard's, JCPenney and Sears.
